Azeri sambo wrestler drowns in Georgia

26 July 2010 23:52 (UTC+04:00)

TBILISI – The European Sambo Cup U17 bronze-winner, Azerbaijani Mikayil Orujov has drowned in a lake in Georgia, Russian media reported.

The 16-year-old athlete participated at the Days of Friendship of the Nations between Azerbaijan and Georgia held Sunday in the neighboring South Caucasus republic’s Dmanisi region. Following the official part of the event, Orujov headed to the lake together with his friends. He tried to swim across the basin -- from one bank to the other -- but failed and drowned.

"Orujov’s death is a big loss both for his loved ones and the entire Azerbaijan. He was a talented and prospective athlete," Russia’s state news agency ITAR-TASS quoted Azerbaijani delegation members as saying.*
