Azeri president names killed soldier national hero (UPDATE)
BAKU - President Ilham Aliyev has conferred Azerbaijani National
Hero Award to the soldier killed recently in a frontline shooting
with Armenian troops.
The award marks Mubariz Ibrahimov’s exemplary bravery and
outstanding service, state-run AzerTAj news agency reported.
Ibrahimov’s memory will be perpetuated by naming a secondary school
and a street in Bilasuvar region after him, according to another
presidential decree.
Ibrahimov showed outstanding heroism during the clashes on the
contact line between Armenian and Azerbaijani troops on June 18-19,
which killed four and wounded four other Armenian soldiers.
Azerbaijan and Armenia have been locked in conflict for two
decades. Armenian armed forces occupy 20 percent of Azerbaijan
including the Nagorno Garabagh region and its seven surrounding
districts, despite four standing UN resolutions on their
unconditional pullout. The ceasefire accord was signed in 1994, but
peace talks have been largely fruitless so far.*
