US Senate to mull Matthew Bryza’s appointment Thursday
WASHINGTON, D.C. - The US Senate Committee on Foreign Relations
is due to discuss on Thursday senior State Department official
Matthew Bryza’s appointment as the next US ambassador to
Azerbaijan.
On the same day the Senate will consider ambassadorial assignments
to Bosnia and Herzegovina, Iceland and Greece, according to the
Senate website.
The post of US ambassador to Azerbaijan has remained vacant for
more than a year. On May 26 President Barack Obama nominated Bryza,
Deputy Assistant Secretary of European and Eurasian Affairs who
served as the US co-chair of the OSCE Minsk Group brokering
settlement to the Armenia-Azerbaijan conflict from 2006-2009. The
White House nomination is now to be approved by the US Senate.
Azerbaijani officials earlier expressed content with the nomination
of Bryza, who is well-informed about Azerbaijan.*
