French Garabagh negotiator to quit soon – report
PARIS - French co-chairman of the OSCE Minsk Group brokering
settlement to the Armenia-Azerbaijan conflict over Upper (Nagorno)
Garabagh, Bernard Fassier, will step down from his post soon, a
source at the French Foreign Ministry told Armenia’s News.am news
website.
Fassier is expected to step down by the end of the year, the report
said, without naming a successor.
The US and Russian Minsk Group co-chairs have recently been
replaced. Matthew Bryza of the United States was succeeded by
Robert Bradtke last September, while Yuri Merzlyakov was succeeded
by Igor Popov this April.
The Garabagh conflict emerged during the last few years of the
Soviet Union. 20 percent of Azerbaijan’s territory, including
Nagorno Garabagh and seven adjacent districts, has been under
Armenian occupation since the two South Caucasus republics signed a
precarious cease-fire following a lengthy war. The OSCE-brokered
peace talks have been largely fruitless so far.*
