Reports on Iraqi Armenians settling in occupied Azeri lands dismissed (UPDATED)
DAMASCUS - The Azerbaijani government has scrutinized
circulating reports about settlements of Iraq’s Armenians living in
Syria in the Armenia-occupied territories of Azerbaijan.
The Azerbaijani embassy in Syria has sent an enquiry to the Iraqi
diplomatic mission in the country, the Azerbaijan Foreign Ministry
said. A statement released by the Iraqi embassy in Damascus says
that as of the end of March, 1,223 former ethnic Armenian Iraqi
refugees were registered at the United Nations High Commissioner
for Refugees representation in Syria. The UNHCR report said that
Iraqi citizens who previously resided in Syria have been settled in
western and central Europe as well as North American countries,
noting that no transfers of these persons to either Armenia or
Azerbaijan have been arranged.
20 percent of Azerbaijan’s territory, including Nagorno Garabagh
and seven adjacent districts, has been under Armenian occupation
since the two South Caucasus republics signed a precarious
cease-fire in 1994 following a lengthy war. OSCE-brokered peace
talks have been largely fruitless so far.
