16 July 2010 10:33 (UTC+04:00)
Azerbaijani Foreign Ministers Elmar Mammadyarov and his Portuguese counterpart Luis Amado inked a Memorandum of Understanding on political consultations between the two countries in Baku on Thursday.
The two ministers also signed an agreement to grant a visa-free access to holders of diplomatic and service passports.
Mammadyarov said at a joint press conference that Amado’s visit would contribute to developing cooperation between Azerbaijan and Portugal.
The minister noted he had briefed his counterpart on Azerbaijan`s stance on the Nagorno Karabakh conflict, adding the dispute must be settled on the basis of Azerbaijan`s territorial integrity and inviolability of borders.
Amado said Azerbaijan was actively participating in EU`s Eastern Partnership program. He underlined as an EU member state Portugal attaches great importance to cooperation with Azerbaijan.
"I invited my counterpart to Lisbon and I think that the development of these contacts will foster cooperation."
Touching upon the Nagorno Karabakh conflict, he said positions of Portugal and EU coincide on the issue.
"We support what the OSCE Minsk Group is doing to settle the conflict. We want peace and stability to be established in the region."
