Musavat leader calls for ‘unification of political forces’
BAKU - The leader of Azerbaijan’s Musavat party, Isa Gambar, has offered uniting with the Popular Front Party of Azerbaijan (PFPA), another major opposition bloc that has long-standing differences with Musavat.
Addressing an event marking a PFPA anniversary on Thursday, Gambar said a need has emerged for a unification of political forces in Azerbaijan, Musavat official Arif Hajily told Radio Liberty.
"He said that he considers unification of political parties after the elections [the November 7 parliamentary elections] appropriate," Hajily said. "PFPA, Musavat and other organizations are implied. Though no specific titles were cited, naturally, we are primarily talking about PFPA and Musavat."
Fuad Gahramanly, a PFPA deputy chairman, says Gambar’s initiative was "successful and timely" and "reflects the country’s political realities".
"There is a need for these two parties to join their potential to ensure democratization in the country," Gahramanly said.
During his speech, Gambar also said his tenure as the Musavat chairman expires this year.
"Gambar said he would step down. A congress of the Musavat party is coming up. It would be good if these two parties unite after the elections and elect their new chairman," the PFPA deputy chair said.
Gahramanly added that the new bloc may be called Musavat.
