Crimes on the rise in rebel Azeri region’s army
Crimes have increased 25 percent in the military of the
self-proclaimed republic run by ethnic Armenians in the occupied
Azerbaijani territories. The crimes include cases of desertion,
deaths, beatings, bribery and suicides, according to Soldiers’
Mothers, a society based in the rebel region.
The organization said in a report that about 2,000 offenses were
reported in the separatist army in 2009, including 70 deaths. More
than 100 of the crimes were cases of desertion, while over 200
offenses were unauthorized absences from military units, 50 suicide
attempts, 500 graft cases, 400 physical assaults and torture, and
40 rapes.
Also, 23 stabbing incidents took place at the military units of
infantry regiments between servicemen who come from Armenia and
Garabagh servicemen. Six Armenian military men were killed and nine
others were sverely injured.
Upper Garabagh is an Azerbaijani region occupied by Armenia since a
1994 cease-fire ended separatist hostilities that killed an
estimated 30,000 people and ousted about one million Azerbaijanis
from their homes. Armenia continues to occupy Upper Garabagh and
seven other Azerbaijani districts in defiance of international law.
Years of peace talks have brought few tangible results.*
