Azeri group protests Armenia’s failure to hand over dead soldier

8 July 2010 09:48 (UTC+04:00)
Representatives of Azerbaijan’s hardline Garabagh Liberation Organization (GLO) held protests Wednesday to condemn Armenia’s failing to hand over the dead body of an Azerbaijani serviceman killed in a clash on the frontline in June.
According to the GLO, the pickets took place outside the local office of the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) and the Defense Ministry.
In front of the ICRC office, the protesters chanted slogans saying "Down with the Committee of the Red Cross", "the Red Cross Committee is a nest of spies", "Shame on the ICRC", and "We demand taking urgent action".
In a meeting with the ICRC office officials, the GLO members demanded taking immediate steps to arrange the handover of Mubariz Ibrahimov’s dead body within the next three days, warning they would "avail of all means to have the ICRC’s activity in Azerbaijan halted otherwise."
Outside the Defense Ministry, the pickets chanted "War or resignation" and "Shame on the defense minister who cannot return the dead body of his soldier" and "We demand taking back the corpse through military action".
Azerbaijani and Armenian armed forces clashed June 19 in Azerbaijan's occupied region of Upper (Nagorno) Garabagh. Four Armenian soldiers were killed, while one Azerbaijani soldier was later found dead in a neutral zone.
Armenia and Azerbaijan waged a war over the mountainous region of Upper Garabagh in the early 1990s, which claimed some 30,000 lives and displaced about one million Azerbaijanis. Armenia has been occupying over 20% of Azerbaijan’s internationally-recognized territory since then. The ceasefire accord was signed in 1994, but peace talks, mediated by the U.S., Russia and France, have been fruitless so far, and sporadic clashes on the frontline continue.*
