Speaker opposes sending Russian peacekeepers to Garabagh
Chairman of the Russian Federation Council (upper chamber of parliament) Sergey Mironov has said he was opposed to sending Russian peacekeepers to Upper (Nagorno) Garabagh, an Azerbaijani region under Armenian occupation.
Mironov told the Voice of Moscow radio station that though Russia is contributing to the ongoing peace talks between Armenia and Azerbaijan, the problem should be resolved by the conflicting sides proper.
"Once they have reached agreement, Russia is ready to play the role of a guarantor of those agreements. But stationing troops in the area is unacceptable, this wouldn’t be right," Mironov said.
Armenia and Azerbaijan signed a precarious cease-fire in 1994 following a lengthy war, but 20 percent of Azerbaijan’s territory, including Upper Garabagh and seven adjacent districts, has been under Armenian occupation since then. Over a decade of efforts by US, Russian and French mediators have been largely fruitless so far.*
