Belarus repays $200m to Azerbaijan
Belarus on Thursday repaid the $200 million loan it had recently
received from Azerbaijan to clear its debt to Russian gas giant
Gazprom, Belarusian financial circles told Interfax-Zapad news
agency.
Though the deadline for repaying the credit was Saturday, it had been decided to return the funds two days earlier, the source said.
Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev had lent the funds to his Belarusian counterpart Alexander Lukashenko. Lukashenko said earlier Belarus had sought two weeks from Moscow to repay the outstanding debt, but Russian partners declined "to wait a single day". Further, he appealed to President Aliyev, who allocated the amount within 24 hours at the most, which allowed Minsk to fully settle its accounts with Gazprom.
The Azerbaijani President’s spokesman, Azer Gasymov, has said Belarusian Prime Minister Sergei Sidorsky had on June 21 appealed to his Azerbaijani counterpart, Artur Rasizada, over Azerbaijan’s allocating a short-term loan to his country. Further, the request was reported to President Aliyev, and, considering the friendship relations between the two countries, the president approved the allocation. According to Gasymov, the loan was allocated for 12 days and all the necessary documents were signed.*
