Aliyev says European Parliament resolution on Garabagh ‘very fair’
The adoption of the recent European Parliament resolution on the
Armenia-Azerbaijan Upper (Nagorno) Garabagh conflict is applauded
in Azerbaijan, President Ilham Aliyev said after meeting his
Bulgarian counterpart Georgi Parvanov, Azerbaijan’s state news
agency AzerTAj reported.
"This resolution is very fair, it comprehensively lays out the premise of the conflict and reflects specific proposals on a withdrawal of the [Armenian] occupying forces from Azerbaijani lands…We want the issue to swiftly find its fair solution based on international organizations’ resolutions and decisions and within the norms of international law. Every new decision, particularly the resolution passed by the European Parliament and similar resolutions, strengthens our stance, and, in short, gives support to a just solution of the problem."
President Aliyev added that Azerbaijan appreciated Bulgarian representatives’ contribution to the passage of the resolution on Garabagh settlement.
The EP resolution, passed on the basis of Bulgarian parliament member Evgeni Kirilov’s report, called on Armenia to withdraw its armed forces from the occupied Azerbaijani territories. The resolution also said the "frozen" conflicts are the biggest hurdle to economic and social development. Armenia strongly opposed the EP resolution.
Since the early 1990s, Armenian armed forces have occupied 20 percent of Azerbaijan including the Upper Garabagh region and its seven surrounding districts, despite widespread international condemnation.*
