PACE chief warns of fallout from Garabagh conflict
The Armenia-Azerbaijan conflict over Upper (Nagorno) Garabagh must be resolved as soon as possible, otherwise, it will cause "undesirable consequences", president of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe (PACE) has warned.
Movlud Chavusoglu told a news conference in Astana that even the Armenian government says that the long-standing dispute could bring about a predicament in the volatile region.
"The OSCE and [its mediating] Minsk Group should redouble their efforts to reach a solution," said Chavusoglu.
The PACE head, who is on a visit to the Kazakh capital, has met with the OSCE Chairman-in-Office, Kazakh Foreign Minister Kanat Saudabayev for discussions that focused on the Garabagh settlement and the latest developments in Kyrgyzstan.
Saudabayev said that further efforts of the Minsk Group as well as the willingness of Azerbaijan and Armenia to resolve the protracted dispute could foster a solution to the problem.
Armenia and Azerbaijan waged a war in the early 1990s, which claimed some 30,000 lives and displaced about one million Azerbaijanis. Armenia has been occupying over 20% of Azerbaijan’s internationally recognized territory since then. Peace talks, brokered by the United States, Russia and France through the Minsk Group, have largely accomplished no results.*
