Man dies in police custody

20 February 2008 22:32 (UTC+04:00)
An Azerbaijani citizen has died while in policy custody. The resident of the central Hajigabul district Zabit Abbasov had been detained on suspicion of selling drugs.
Abbasov passed away shortly after he was brought to the police precinct, the Interior Ministry spokesman Ehsan Zahidov said.
Abbasov's brother, Ashraf Abbasov, claimed that the detainee had been subject to torture while in detention, received a head injury and his clothes was torn. The ministry spokesman brushed off the allegations.
The district prosecutor's office has started a criminal case. Samples have been taken from the dead body and sent to Baku for a medical expertise.
The local Committee Against Torture says four persons died of torture in Azerbaijan in 2007, including three cases in the army and one in the Interior Ministry pre-trial detention. A total of 63 people were subjected to torture last year, according to the group's chairman Elchin Behbudov.
But official sources have refuted the data.
