PACE appoints new co-rapporteur on Azerbaijan
A new co-rapporteur of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe (PACE) for Azerbaijan was appointed at a meeting of the assembly’s Monitoring Committee on Thursday. Pedro Agramunt of Spain will succeed Andres Herkel of Estonia in this capacity.
"He is one of the most authoritative members of the Council of Europe," head of the Azerbaijani delegation to PACE Samad Seyidov said.
Seyidov considers that the work of the new co-rapporteur will be objective.
"I am confident that Mr. Agramunt, as a person with an objective image, will organize his activities related to Azerbaijan, correctly, objectively and in line with mutual respect. Our relations with two co-rapporteurs Joseph Debono Grech and Pedro Agramunt will serve to further development of the relations between Azerbaijan and the Council of Europe and the whole Azerbaijan-European relations at the highest level," he added.
Herkel has served as PACE co-rapporteur on Azerbaijan for five years. On Thursday, PACE was expected to discuss a report on the activity of democratic institutions in Azerbaijan by Herkel and Grech.
A PACE co-rapporteur on Armenia has also been replaced. Goran Lindblad, an MP of the conservative Swedish Moderate Party, who previously headed the PACE political affairs committee, succeeds Georges Colombier of France.*
