Iran ready to aid flood relief efforts in Azerbaijan
Iran is ready to provide assistance to Azerbaijan in eliminating the aftermath of the devastating floods that hit a number of the country’s regions in May, its official has said.
Minister of Economic Affairs and Finance, Seyed Shamseddin Hosseini, said during a visit to Baku that Iran’s production of agricultural goods has been high this year, and his country could both help to alleviate the consequences of the floods and play a role in preventing a shortage of produce.
As a result of the floods, caused by the overflowing of the Kura and Araz rivers, 20,000 homes, 50,000 hectares of arable land and pastures have flooded, over 300 homes collapsed, 2,000 houses have been severely damaged, and extensive infrastructure and numerous social facilities have become dilapidated.
Hosseini also said Iran was interested in implementing investment projects jointly with Azerbaijan and in expanding bilateral cooperation in the field of insurance and other sectors.
The minister said import and export transactions between the two countries currently stand at $500 million. Hosseini said Tehran aims at gradually bringing the trade turnover to as much as $10 billion, adding that there was vast potential to reach that goal.*
