Crashed air force jet found
The remains of an Azerbaijani air force plane that crashed into the
Caspian Sea on January 29 and the dead body of one of the pilots
were found on Sunday, the Defense Ministry spokesman Eldar
Sabiroghlu said.
In conclusion of the nearly three-week search, the MiG-29 fighter jet was discovered at water depths of 15-17 meters. Divers and heavy machinery have been pulled up to the site. The equipment is being used to lift the aircraft's frame and other parts from the water.
The plane had crashed near the Shurabad settlement some 35 km north of the capital Baku during a training flight, killing both crew members on board. The reasons of the accident are being investigated.
The Ukraine-made MiG-29 is a 4th generation topnotch jet fighter aircraft that outclasses NATO's F-6 and Tornado fighter jets.
Azerbaijan acquired the upgraded MiG-29 aircraft early in 2007.
