New healthcare unit to counter virus threats in Azerbaijan
A virology department meeting the highest standards opened on Monday at the Azerbaijan Agriculture Ministry’s State Veterinary Service.
The department, established at the Republican Veterinary Laboratory as part of a program on warding off biological threats, being implemented jointly by the US Defense Threat Reduction Agency (DTRA) and Azerbaijan’s Cabinet of Ministers, has been supplied with the most up-to-date equipment. The facility will diagnose such perilous diseases as bird flu and foot-and-mouth disease.
$1 million has been allocated to carry out repair, purchase and install the required equipment.
A DTRA official attending the opening said the agency would be contributing to the improvement of laboratories in Azerbaijani regions as well. Virology departments will be opened in the future in four regional laboratories and further in eight more labs. Under the biological threat prevention program, construction of a reference lab in the 8th Kilometer area in Baku and of an epidemiology monitoring station in the Sabirabad region is underway.
The United States is expected to allot $76 million worth of assistance to Azerbaijan as part of the mentioned program.*
