31 Azeris linked to terror group convicted
A group of 31 Azerbaijani citizens charged with a link to an
international terror network and other grave crimes were handed
down jail terms on Thursday.
The Grave Crimes Court sentenced the defendants, who had set up a
radical religious group, to three to fifteen years
imprisonment.
According to the indictment, the defendants had set up an illegal
armed group and planned to commit acts defying Azerbaijan’s
statehood, including staging an explosion on the Baku-Novorossiysk
northern route oil pipeline that stretches from the Azerbaijani
capital to neighboring Russia. Large quantities of arms and
ammunition were impounded from the outlaws during their
seizure.
The ring leader, Azer Misirkhanov, nicknamed Abdullah, had been
involved in illegal warfare in various conflict zones in the past.
Misirkhanov was killed a while ago during an operation carried out
by the US military in Afghanistan.*
