US, British diplomats bet on Saturday soccer match
British Ambassador to Azerbaijan Carolyn Browne and US Charge
D’affairs in Baku Donald Lieu have made a bet on the upcoming
soccer match to be played by their countries’ teams in the World
Cup.
The 19th world soccer championships started in the South African Republic on Friday. The match between Britain and the United States, which are both in Group C, will begin at 11.30 p.m. Baku time on Saturday.
Charge D’affairs Lieu said soccer is a very popular sport in the U.S., while in Britain there is nationwide interest.
"When Britons’ favorite teams lose, this causes tears and hysteria. So, it would be good if you get a lot of handkerchiefs ready for tomorrow’s game. We believe we will win. If the United States wins, the British ambassador will have to put on Uncle Sam’s hat."
British Ambassador Browne, in turn, said Charge D’affairs Lieu will have to put on a British hat. "The British team will win 5:0," she said.
Lieu said in conclusion that the game is taking place between two countries that have fraternal relations. "Therefore, in a good sense, I am expecting a real battle on the pitch."
June 28 will be the 60th anniversary of the US win over England in World Football Cup. The only goal in that game was scored by Joe Gaetjens. The game is known as the Miracle on Grass and is considered a remarkable success in the US soccer history. It is for this reason that staunch rivalry is expected at Saturday’s game between the two teams.*
