Azeri leader to respond to Obama message
Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev will write a letter to his US
counterpart Barack Obama in response to the one recently addressed
to him by the White House leader, Aliyev has said in Istanbul.
He told journalists that the points cited in President Obama’s
message outline prospects for U.S.-Azerbaijan relations. "This is
because the letter both reflects the points that have been ironed
out so far, and, I think, this letter is mostly a major step toward
the future. The letter covers a very extensive history of
America-Azerbaijan relations in all enumerated areas.
"The agenda of bilateral relations between America and Azerbaijan
is very broad. I hope that in the coming years we will introduce
new, additional factors to our cooperation that would satisfy both
sides. This was a very well-intended letter. We will continue
cooperating in the future around all issues indicated in it."
Obama’s letter was delivered to President Aliyev by US Defense
Secretary Robert Gates during his two-day visit to Baku earlier
this week during which he visited with President Aliyev and met
with Defense Minister Col. Gen. Safar Abiyev. Obama expressed
gratitude for Azerbaijan’s contributions in Afghanistan, saying
such assistance has "strengthened your country’s stature as a
steadfast security partner." The letter also conveys Obama’s desire
for a broader and deeper future relationship between the two
countries.*
