Azerbaijan ratifies military doctrine
Azerbaijan’s parliament adopted the country’s military doctrine at its extraordinary meeting on Tuesday.
The draft consists of seven sections and 75 items. It covers such issues as national security, war threats in the region, the facts of military aggression, military aggression of Armenia against Azerbaijan and the challenges it is causing, and relevant commitments facing Azerbaijan’s armed forces. The doctrine also outlines the future strategy of military build-up, international military cooperation and the military treaties concluded by Azerbaijan.
The military doctrine cites exceptions concerning the stationing of foreign military bases in Azerbaijani territory. With the exception of the international agreements co-signed by Azerbaijan, the country does not allow foreign military presence on its soil. However, depending on the situation, Baku reserves the right to authorize stationing foreign bases in the future.
Armenia, which has been occupying part of Azerbaijan’s territory for nearly two decades, is labeled as an aggressor in the doctrine. The document also covers the consequences of this aggression and cites huge risks posed for national security.*
