Azeris ‘lack interest’ in European integration
The civil society in Azerbaijan is not greatly interested in
European integration, says the coordinator for the country of the
Civil Society Forum on the European Union’s Eastern Partnership
program that aims to boost the bloc’s cooperation with its
ex-Soviet partners.
Avaz Hasanov told a news conference Friday that what he called the authorities’ being rather inactive in the integration into Europe was rather understandable, but the public’s inactivity should be deemed abnormal.
The national coordinator called for active involvement of the civil society in the Eastern Partnership Forum. He added that, in addition to non-governmental organizations, other civil society institutions, trade unions, university associations and other organizations may apply for membership in the Forum until July 2.
21 Azerbaijani NGOs are presently represented in the Civil Society Forum, which was established in Brussels in November 2009.*
