Obama congratulates Azeris on Republic Day
US President Barack Obama has congratulated his Azerbaijani
counterpart Ilham Aliyev on May 28, the Republic Day, according to
the US embassy in Baku.
"I am proud of the partnership between our countries to fight global threats, bolster regional stability, and address our common security concerns," President Obama wrote in his congratulatory message. "I look forward to deepening that partnership in the months and years to come as we develop new opportunities to cooperate. The United States values its strong relationship with the Azerbaijani government and people, and remains committed to Azerbaijan’s sovereignty and development as a prosperous and democratic state, contributing to stability both in its region and globally."
The People’s Republic of Azerbaijan, the first-ever secular democratic republic in the world with Islamic population, was established on May 28, 1918. The republic that existed for only 23 months collapsed due to the invasion of Azerbaijan by Soviet Russia in April 1920. Azerbaijan gained independence from the Soviet Union in 1991.*
