Official raps Azerbaijan’s branding Russian lawmakers ‘persona-non-grata’
Boris Gryzlov,
the Speaker of State Duma, Russia’s lower house of parliament, has
criticized the announcement of Russian lawmakers as
"persona-non-grata" in Azerbaijan after observing recent
"elections" held by the Armenia-backed separatist regime in
Azerbaijan’s occupied Upper (Nagorno) Garabagh region.
Speaking to reporters in the Armenian capital Yerevan Monday, Gryzlov noted that the group of lawmakers who visited Upper Garabagh was not an official delegation of the State Duma. "Moreover, as far as I know, there were over a hundred observers from different countries in the territory of Upper Garabagh. Azerbaijan’s decision refers to Russian MPs and, certainly, my attitude toward this is negative."
Ethnic Armenians in Upper Garabagh, backed by Armenia, declared so-called independence in fighting that erupted as the Soviet Union headed towards its 1991 collapse. The war left over 30,000 people dead on both sides. The Armenians invaded Upper Garabagh and seven surrounding Azeri districts before a cease-fire was declared in 1994. On May 23, the separatist regime held "a parliamentary "election", which was condemned by Azerbaijan and the world community.*
