Armenia insists on ‘status quo’ in conflict settlement
Armenian Deputy Foreign Minister Savarsh Kocharian has alleged
that, given Azerbaijan’s position, the only acceptable solution to
the Upper (Nagorno) Garabagh conflict "is the current status
quo".
He was commenting on Azerbaijani Foreign Minister Elmar Mammadyarov’s statement that "the day the Azerbaijani flag will waive over Khankandi will be the day the conflict will find its solution."
Kocharian believes that such statements toughen Baku’s stance.
"Given Azerbaijan’s stance, it is useless to talk about territorial concessions. These concessions weaken our position," the Armenian deputy minister said.
Azerbaijan and Armenia fought a lengthy war in the early 1990s. Though the separatist regime in Upper Garabagh declared so-called independence in 1991, this "independence", which blatantly tramples on international law, has not been recognized by the world community to date.*
