"The Russian and Azerbaijani people have repeatedly surmounted challenging trials together… Today, the development of Russia-Azerbaijan strategic partnership is an important factor of stability and security in the region."
Medvedev noted, further, that such a partnership enables the implementation of mutually beneficial trade and economic cooperation projects and serves to boosting humanitarian relations between the two countries.
"I am confident that stepping up joint efforts for the sake of expanding our countries’ mutually beneficial activity is completely in line with the interests of the Russian and Azerbaijani people."
World leaders have also congratulated the Azerbaijani president on the Day of Republic. Pope Benedict XVI and UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon have sent congratulatory letters to President Aliyev. Also extending their congratulatory messages were the King of Saudi Arabia, the Queen of England and Pakistan’s President.
