Baku picked among cities to mark World Environment Day
The Azerbaijani capital, Baku, has been selected by the United
Nations Environment Program (UNEP) as one of the three European
cities where the World Environment Day will be marked -- along with
Genoa, Italy and Geneva, Switzerland.
Baku’s being chosen as one of the venues is seen as the outcome of extensive efforts aimed at environmental protection and the implementation of state and nationwide programs, as well as international organizations’ attaching great importance to Azerbaijan in the region.
World Environment Day (WED), June 5, is a day that stimulates awareness of the environment and enhances public attention to environmental protection. On that day the United Nations Conference on the Human Environment began. It was established by the UN General Assembly in 1972. Then, a new institution was formed within the UN – the United Nations Environment Program (UNEP).
World Environment Day is commemorated with an international exposition on the week that June 5 is on. It also marked with street rallies, bicycle rides, "green" concerts, tree-planting, waste recycling and a slew of other activities.
World Environment Day is in summer in the Northern Hemisphere and winter in the Southern Hemisphere.*
