Azerbaijan, Egypt sign three co-op deals
Azerbaijan and Egypt signed three agreements during Egyptian Foreign Minister Ahmed Aboul Gheit’s visit to the country on Monday.
The documents cover lifting visa regulations for diplomats and state servants, cooperation in the areas of youth and sports, and an agreement between the Azerbaijan Academy of Diplomacy and Egypt’s Institute for Diplomatic Studies.
Azerbaijani Foreign Minister Elmar Mammadyarov told a news briefing following the signing that his Egyptian counterpart’s visit to Baku would allow expanding political and humanitarian collaboration between the two countries.
Ahmed Aboul Gheit, the first Egyptian foreign minister to visit Azerbaijan, said, for his part, that bilateral relations, including cooperation on the world stage, were firm.
"There are no issues impeding the development of these relations. The two countries are maintaining strong international cooperation both within the United Nations and the Organization for Islamic Conference (OIC) as well as within the organizations of the countries that have not joined political blocs."
Gheit pointed to the vast potential to further boost Egypt-Azerbaijan ties, saying the existing opportunities should be capitalized upon efficiently.
Touching on the Armenia-Azerbaijan conflict over Upper (Nagorno) Garabagh, the Egyptian minister voiced hope for a peaceful settlement of the long-standing dispute, adding that his country supports a solution based on Azerbaijan’s territorial integrity.*
