UN GA to mull two papers on Garabagh
The UN General Assembly will consider two resolutions on the Armenia-Azerbaijan Upper (Nagorno) Garabagh conflict during its 65th session.
One of the documents deals with protracted conflicts in the territories of GUAM, a group of Georgia, Ukraine, Azerbaijan and Moldova, and their impact on world peace, security and development, while the other one is a draft resolution covering the situation in the Armenia-occupied territories of Azerbaijan, the UN Information Center said.
The date for discussing the two draft resolutions at the UN GA is expected to be announced in late September.
Robert Cutler, a UN expert on Eurasia, said the UN has so far been unable to make a substantial contribution to the settlement of lingering conflicts in the Caucasus region. "This shouldn’t be seen as a failure of the UN, but it’s a fact."
Azerbaijan and Armenia – two of the South Caucasus states - have been locked in conflict for two decades. Armenia has been occupying over 20 percent of Azerbaijan's internationally recognized territory since the early 1990s. The UN Security Council has passed four resolutions on unconditional pullout of the Armenian armed forces, but none of them have been implemented so far.*
