Turkey condemns planned “election” in Azeri rebel region
The Turkish Foreign Ministry on Thursday issued a statement
condemning "parliamentary elections" expected to be held on May 23,
Sunday in Upper (Nagorno) Garabagh by the separatist regime.
Turkey said it won`t recognize the so-called parliamentary elections in the Garabagh region as the elections are a blatant violation of UN Security Council resolutions and the principles of the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe (OSCE).
The statement reads out "it has been brought to our attention that the so-called "Parliamentary elections" will be held on May 23 in the Azerbaijani territory of Upper Garabagh, which remains under Armenian occupation, in total contravention of international law and contrary to the relevant decisions and expectations of the international community."
"These "elections", which we consider to be part of a unilateral effort to legitimize the de facto unlawful situation in Upper Garabagh, constitute a clear breach of international law as well as related UNSC resolutions and OSCE principles," the statement goes on.
The ministry emphasized that the Garabagh conflict represents the most important obstacle for the establishment of peace, stability and security in the South Caucasus, prevents the emergence of a situation conducive to the development of good-neighbourly relations and cooperation among the countries in the region.
"It is clear that at the current stage, where intensified negotiations directed at peaceful resolution of the Garabagh issue and the conflict between Azerbaijan and Armenia continues under the auspices of the OSCE Minsk Group, holding "Parliamentary elections" in the occupied territory of Upper Garabagh is clearly an attempt which will adversely affect the ongoing efforts for the peaceful solution of this problem."
"In this regard, Turkey, while deploring this act which violates Azerbaijan’s political unity, sovereignty and territorial integrity, will not recognize the results of these illegal elections which are certainly null and void in terms of international law," the statement concludes. *
