PACE committee hears report on Azerbaijan
A report assessing the situation with democratic institutions in Azerbaijan was heard at a meeting of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe (PACE) Monitoring Committee on Wednesday. The report had been prepared by Andres Herkel of Estonia and Joseph Debono Grech of Malta, the assembly’s co-rapporteurs on the country.
The Azerbaijani PACE delegation head, Samad Seyidov, said the discussions proceeded quite constructively. However, he said the Azerbaijani representatives opposed some points cited in the report.
"In particular, we deem as unacceptable using the Monitoring Committee report as a tool of pressure on the policy pursued by Azerbaijan," Seyidov said.
The PACE report on Azerbaijan will be released in June.*
