Armenian FM meets OSCE mediators in Brussels
Armenian Foreign Minister Eduard Nalbandian met on Wednesday in
Brussels with the OSCE mediators brokering settlement to the
Armenia-Azerbaijan conflict over Upper (Nagorno) Garabagh to
discuss the current stage of the ongoing peace talks.
The Minsk Group co-chairs - Bernard Fassier of France, Robert
Bradtke of the United States and Igor Popov of Russia - intend to
further conduct a similar meeting with Azerbaijani Foreign Minister
Elmar Mammadyarov in early June, according to a statement released
by the mediators Thursday.
Armenia and Azerbaijan waged a war over the mountainous region of
Upper Garabagh in the early 1990s which claimed some 30,000 lives.
Armenia has been occupying over 20% of Azerbaijan’s territory since
then, despite UN resolutions on the unconditional pullout of its
armed forces. The ceasefire accord was signed in 1994, but peace
talks have been largely fruitless, so far.*
