Serbia, Azerbaijan sign co-op agreements
Serbia and Azerbaijan signed six agreements during Serbian
President Boris Tadic’s visit to Baku on Thursday.
The two countries’ leaders signed a joint statement. The signed documents also included a protocol on cooperation between the Serbian and Azerbaijani foreign ministries, inter-governmental agreements on waiving visas for the holders of diplomatic and official passports, on cooperation in joint combat against crimes, and on trade and economic collaboration, as well as a convention on lifting double taxation.
The signing was preceded by a meeting of the Serbian and Azerbaijani leaders. The parties underscored vast potential for expanding bilateral relations in a multitude of fields, including economics, and voiced confidence that the relations between Serbia and Azerbaijan would continue to develop, according to the Azerbaijani President’s press-service.
Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev said the two countries are enjoying very firm political relations.
"I am hopeful that our economic cooperation will be in line with that strategic course. The relations with Serbia are of great importance for us. I am confident that our strong bilateral relations will also open up good opportunities for regional cooperation between the Balkan and Caucasus regions and we will move forward."
Tadic, for his part, said a Serbian leader has paid a visit to Azerbaijan for the first time in the history of bilateral relations.
"So, we are making history here. I hope we will develop our relations as real friends in the future.
"I see a number of similarities between the developing regions that we live in – the Balkans and the Caucasus. We are faced with the same challenges," Tadic said.
He added that Serbia and Azerbaijan share common interests regarding the protection of the territorial integrity of states.
Azerbaijan, which has endured occupation of a part of its territory by neighboring Armenia’s troops, does not recognize Kosovo, which declared independence from Serbia in 2008.*
