Azerbaijan, Russia talk military co-op
Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev received the
visiting Russian Defense Minister Anatoly Serdyukov on Tuesday.
President Aliyev noted that the military parade held on Sunday in Moscow to mark the 65th anniversary of the victory over fascism in World War II was organized on a high level. He also termed Azerbaijani officers’ attending the solemn event as a symbol of friendship between Azerbaijan and Russia.
During the meeting the parties emphasized that bilateral relations are successfully developing in a variety of fields, including the defense industry, pointing to the importance of Serdyukov’s visit for broadening military cooperation.
Serdyukov also held a meeting with Azerbaijani Defense Minister Safar Abiyev. Discussions centered on prospects for developing Baku-Moscow collaboration in the military-technical field, military and political situation in the region and the Armenia-Azerbaijan conflict over Upper (Nagorno) Garabagh, according to Azerbaijan's Defense Ministry.
Abiyev said the mediating activity of the OSCE Minsk Group brokering talks on Garabagh settlement has been fruitless, which necessitates a more vigorous effort. The minister added that all endeavors should be directed to reaching a peaceful solution, otherwise, the situation may reach "an undesirable point" for the region.*
