Turkish PM’s Baku visit detailed
Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan’s visit to Azerbaijan,
due later this month, will take place immediately after discussions
on constitutional changes draw to a close in the Grand National
Assembly (parliament), reports say.
According to Turkey’s NTV channel, Erdogan will first head to Batumi, where he will attend an opening ceremony, and then leave the Georgian town for Baku.
In a meeting with President Ilham Aliyev, the parties will discuss the talks held with the Armenian leader in Washington, the Turkey-Armenia reconciliation accords signed in late 2009 and the overall situation in the volatile South Caucasus region.
Of note, Baku and Ankara are expected to sign an agreement on transporting Azerbaijani gas to Turkey and further to Europe during Erdogan’s visit. The agreement will put an end to the long-standing differences between the two countries on gas supplies. Baku and Ankara have already reached agreement "in principle". The issues discussed were the price of gas exported to Turkey during Phase 1 of developing Azerbaijan’s biggest gas field Shahdaniz; the price and volume of gas to be sold to Turkey during Phase 2; and the transit of fuel to Europe.
According to diplomatic sources, the Turkish prime minister will arrive in Azerbaijan on May 16.*
