Baku welcomes new effort to reach Mideast peace
The Azerbaijani government has welcomed the US-backed Middle
East peace conference that started on Tuesday in a bid to strike a
breakthrough in Israel-Palestine talks.
"Baku believes that the conference called in the US town of
Annapolis is an important stage in the resolution of the problem,"
the Foreign Ministry spokesman Khazar Ibrahim told the press ahead
of the gathering.
Ibrahim said that any event aimed at reaching peace in the
conflict-ravaged region would be beneficial.
Some 40 countries and organizations have been invited to the
conference in the state of Maryland.
The endeavor comes after talks between Israeli and Palestinian
negotiators in Washington to pave the way for negotiations aimed at
ending the many-decade-long conflict.
The Islamist movement, Hamas, which is labeled a terror
organization by the United States, EU and Israel, will not delegate
representatives to Annapolis. The group has warned that
Palestinians will not be bound by any decisions taken at the
conference.
