Azerbaijan, Iran to ink co-op papers during Aliyev's visit
Azerbaijan and Iran are expected to sign a number of agreements
during President Ilham Aliyev's official visit to the neighboring
country due this spring, Ambassador Nasser Hamidi Zare said.
The documents will cover a wide range of fields including trade, mutual investments, energy, electric power, supplies of natural gas, lifting double taxation and cooperation in the transport sector, the envoy told journalists.
Hamidi Zare said ways of expanding cooperation and regional issues would be discussed during the visit.
He said this would be a reciprocal visit following one paid by Iranian President Mahmud Ahmadinejad to Azerbaijan in 2007. The precise timing of the visit is yet to be scheduled.
The envoy noted that Azerbaijani Parliament Speaker Ogtay Asadov is also expected to visit his country this year. Mutual visits by Foreign Minister Elmar Mammadyarov and his Iranian counterpart Manouchehr Mottaki are scheduled as well.
Speaking of the level of economic relations between the two countries, Hamidi Zare said bilateral trade turnover made up $600 million in 2007. He said that if petty trade is also taken into account, the figure actually amounted to $1 billion.
The ambassador pointed to vast potential to further boost Azeri-Iranian trade. "If we avail of this potential, the commodities turnover could be brought to $2 billion in the coming years."
