OSCE hopes for sanctioning protests in Azerbaijan
Bilge Cankorel, head of the OSCE Office in Baku, has said his
organization would like for a permission to be granted for public
protests in Azerbaijan. He was replying to reporters’ question
about the dispersal of recent opposition protests in Baku.
Cankorel said the Law on Freedom of Assembly, adopted by Azerbaijan
earlier with input from the OSCE and other international
organizations, complies with international standards, and the OSCE
is currently working to ensure its enforcement. "We want political
parties to be able to join the election campaigns more
actively."
According to Cankorel, the OSCE would like for venues to be
allocated for public protests close to the city center, just like
in developed European countries, and for political parties’
communication with the people to be facilitated. He voiced hope
that the Azerbaijani authorities will treat such protests with
tolerance.*
