Knesset committee to discuss Armenian ‘genocide’: report
The Knesset, Israel’s
parliament, on Wednesday approved a motion to begin discussing in
one of its committees the alleged Ottoman-era genocide of
Armenians.
According to the IzRus news portal, the lawmakers approved putting
the issue on the agenda with a 12-8 vote. The initiative was
supported by representatives of the Meretz and Avoda parties, a
former journalist, as well as ethnic Arab MPs. The most arduous
opponents were members of the Israel – Our Home party.
The motion was initiated by MP Haim Oron of Meretz. Preliminary
discussions are likely to take place at the Knesset committee on
foreign relations and security. Among its members are Zeyev Elkin,
a Likud party representative who backs Oron, and Robert Ilatov, an
arduous opponent of discussing the alleged genocide, who chairs the
Israel-Azerbaijan parliamentary group friendship.
Historians note that during the developments in the Ottoman Empire
from 1915 to 1923, Armenians had begun an uprising. They had taken
up arms against Turkey and assisted Russia, one of Turkey’s enemies
in WWI. To counter these actions, the Ottoman Empire approved a
decision to resettle the Armenians. However, the latter claim that
their predecessors were subjected to genocide in the process, while
Ankara rejects the allegations.*
