34% of high-speed web users in Azerbaijan unhappy: poll
34.7 percent of ADSL high-speed internet users in Azerbaijan are
discontent with their connection, a recent poll has found.
44.5 percent of the 400 people surveyed by the Azerbaijan Internet Forum said they had trouble accessing the Web, while another 20 percent said they were happy with their broadband internet services.
47 pct of people using the Bakinternet provider, 45 pct of Aztelekom users and 39 pct of Ultel cutsomers are unhappy with their connection. Also, few users of Superonline and Azeronline are content with the quality of the internet, according to the study.
57 pct of respondents complained they were not receiving the connection speed indicated in the contract signed with their ISPs, while 51 pct of those polled cited frequent disconnections. 36 pct of users said the internet was too expensive, while 31 pct said customer service and technical support offered leave a lot to be desired.
The study also revealed that disconnections are the most frequent problem for the users of Bakinternet, Connect, Ultel and Dataplus.
70 pct of Aztelekom users, 62 pct of Uninet-Stream and Azeronline users, and 61 pct of Bakinternet customers said they were unable to use the due connection speed.
According to the Internet Forum head, Osman Gunduz, the poll was conducted in Baku and Sumgayit, the country’s third largest city. 20 pct of respondents were users of Bakinternet, while 17 pct use Connect, 16 pct Uninet-Stream, 14 pct Azeronline, eight percent Ultel, and seven percent Aztelekom.
Gunduz believes the problems are caused mainly by the lack of an environment of free competition in the Internet services market. He opined that the prevalence of such state-run ISPs as Bakinternet, Aztelekom and Dataplus essentially means their control over the market. "To imrpove the situation, primarily, these providers should be privatized."*
