Prominent Azeri scholar’s killers ‘found refuge in Iran’
The masterminds of well-known Azerbaijani
academician Ziya Bunyadov’s murder have found refuge in Iran,
Prosecutor-General Zakir Garalov said in parliament Tuesday.
Bunyadov was killed in February 1997 outside the building he lived in.
Garalov also said the opposition was politicizing the case. "By libel and slander the opposition can link any person of authority to this crime and sully him. But the investigation carried out has produced other results."
According to the prosecutor-general, investigators have established that the killing was committed by a certain Iranian religious group, and those involved have been brought to book. However, Javanshir Aslan and Tariel Ramazanov, who were among the orchestrators of the crime, have found refuge in the neighboring country.
Born in 1923 in Astara, Bunyadov bore the title of a Soviet Union Hero and served as vice-president of the Azerbaijan National Academy of Sciences and as a parliament member.*
