Azeri parliament endorses top prosecutor
The Azerbaijani parliament on Tuesday approved Zakir
Garalov for another five-year term as Prosecutor-General, voting
103-6 for the nomination submitted by President Ilham Aliyev.
Later in the day, President Aliyev enacted a decree endorsing Garalov’s appointment.
Garalov, 54, was born in the Dmanisi region of Georgia. He was previously appointed prosecutor-general in 2000 and 2005. Azerbaijan’s previous legislation contained a two-term limit on the top prosecutor’s post. However, in October 2009, the Milli Majlis lifted the restriction by introducing amendments to the Law on Prosecutor’s Office.*
