Azeri opposition attempts to protest again
Activists of Azerbaijan’s staunchly opposition Azadlig bloc
attempted to hold an unauthorized protest outside the Mayor’s
Office of Baku on Monday, in a second such protest in a week,
demanding what they called reinstating their right to assemble
freely and authorizing the conduct of public protests.
Up to 30 members of the Popular Front, Liberal and Civil and Development Parties, gathering near the Icherisheher subway station downtown at around noon, tried to advance toward the Mayor’s Office building, chanting slogans "Free elections", "Resignation" and "Democracy". The police blocked the protesters and took them away from the site in buses. The remaining small groups of opposition activists continued chanting slogans.
Razi Nurullayev, deputy chairman of the Popular Front Party of Azerbaijan (PFPA), said the protest had taken place. "The main point is that we managed to voice our slogans and protested at the violations of law," he claimed.
Representatives of the OSCE Baku office, who watched the protest, did not comment on their observations.*
