Azeri NGOs’ turnover over $37.5m
The annual turnover of over 2,000 non-governmental organizations registered in Azerbaijan has reached 30 million manats ($37.5 million), according to the state body assisting NGOs.
Azay Guliyev, chairman of the Council for State Support to Non-Governmental Organizations under the President, said state assistance exceeding 7.41 million manats ($9.26 million) has been channeled into the NGO sector in the past two years. Also, international donor organizations have been providing considerable funds to Azerbaijani NGOs in grants, with the US Agency for International Development rendering the most assistance, according to Guliyev. USAID has allocated grants to the tune of $116 million from 2005-2009. The OSCE’s grants made up 5m manats ($6.25m) in this period, while Open Society Institute - Assistance Foundation allotted $21.5m in 2000-2009.
Azerbaijani NGOs transferred taxes worth 11m manats ($13.75m) to the state budget in 2009.
As of February 2010, 2,483 NGOs were registered in Azerbaijan, with 801 being active. The organizations employ over 7,000 people, including 3,979 permanent employees. The NGOs comprise 500,000 members and volunteers.
The country’s NGOs are mostly engaged in economics, protecting the rights of youngsters and children, sports, and overall rights advocacy, with over 200 organizations operating in each field. The areas that are not in focus of the NGOs include anti-corruption combat, municipalities and tourism.*
