Azeri first lady rubbishes report on ‘buying $100,000 cigarette-case’
Azerbaijani First Lady Mehriban Aliyeva has dismissed the Turkish
ATV channel’s report claiming that she had purchased a
cigarette-case worth $100,000, labeling it as libelous. A number of
media outlets have published Aliyeva’s letter refuting the ATV’s
April 15 report.
"Mehriban Aliyeva has appealed to ATV director Erdogam Aktas and Turkish Ambassador to Azerbaijan Hulusi Kilic on this matter," the day.az website said. It noted that it was not the first time libelous reports were published in some media about the Azerbaijani president and his family members.
"Such reports about the First Lady are met negatively to a boundless extent. If such instances reoccur in the future, all measures will be taken in line with legislation to hold the persons and organizations in question accountable. A statement from the Presidential Administration demands a retraction and extending an apology to First Lady Mehriban Aliyeva."
Azerbaijan’s TV channels have also reported that slanderous reports had been aired about the First Lady.
A while ago, The Washington Post published a story alleging that President Ilham Aliyev’s relatives own property totaling $75 million in Dubai.*
