Aliyev praises Pakistan’s backing on Garabagh
Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev has praised Pakistan for
supporting Azerbaijan’s position on its conflict with Armenia over
Upper (Nagorno) Garabagh.
Receiving Pakistan’s Defense Secretary Syed Athar Ali on Thursday,
President Aliyev thanked Pakistan for its backing Baku during the
voting on a resolution on the situation in the country’s occupied
territories at the Organization of the Islamic Conference and the
UN Security Council, and also for not recognizing Armenia because
of its military aggression against Azerbaijan.
The president also reaffirmed Azerbaijan’s backing of Pakistan’s
stance on the Kashmir conflict.
Praising Azerbaijan-Pakistan relations and partnership, President
Aliyev expressed confidence that discussions on important issues
relating to bilateral cooperation would take place during the
Pakistani defense chief’s visit. The Azerbaijani leader said his
country was interested in expanding its cooperation with Pakistan,
stressing "there are good opportunities to get it done in the
military field and the defense industry."
The Pakistani defense secretary stressed the importance of the two
countries’ support for each other’s positions on the world
stage.
Syed Athar Ali called the Garabagh conflict Azerbaijan’s "most
critical problem", adding that this is the reason Pakistan does not
recognize Armenia.*
