Armenian clerical leader to visit Baku
Armenian Catholicos Garegin II will arrive in Baku next Monday to
attend a summit of world clerical leaders, Novosti Armenii news
agency has reported quoting Garegin’s press office.
The visit will be reportedly paid at the invitation of the Patriarch of Russian Orthodox Church Kirill and Azerbaijan’s top cleric, Caucasus Clerical Office chairman, Sheikhulislam Allahshukur Pashazada. During the one-day visit Garegin II will be accompanied by two clerics from the Echmiadzin Church.
A quidri-lateral meeting of Azerbaijani, Russian, Georgian and Armenian clerical leaders is scheduled during the visit. However, it is not known, at this point, whether or not there will be a separate meeting between Sheikh Pashazada and Garegin II.
The summit is due to be joined by over 300 representatives of more than 40 countries.
Garegin will become the first high-ranking Armenian cleric to set foot in Azerbaijan since the outbreak of the Upper (Nagorno) Garabagh conflict in 1988. *
