Group of US lawmakers urges Obama to recognize Armenian ‘genocide’
Democratic Senator Barbara Boxer and several other US lawmakers
have called on President Barack Obama to recognize the alleged
genocide of Armenians, a claim on the Ottoman-era killings of up to
1.5 million people. Fifteen senators co-signed a letter addressed
to the White House leader, according to the Armenian National
Committee of America (ANCA).
"Despite undisputed evidence about an Armenian genocide committed in Ottoman Turkey in 1915-1923, the U.S. has yet to recognize this historical fact," the lawmakers claimed. "We urge to repair this injustice on April 24 [the date considered by Armenians to be the anniversary of the alleged mass killings] and to finally recognize one of the most horrid crimes of the 20th century."
Historians note that during the developments, Armenians had begun an uprising. They took up arms against Turkey and assisted Russia, one of Turkey’s enemies in WWI. To counter these actions, the Ottoman Empire decided to resettle the Armenians. The latter claim that their predecessors were subjected to genocide in the process, while Ankara rejects the allegations and has offered to research the events through a joint commission of historians.*
