Azeri ruling party calls for changes in Minsk Group
The ruling Yeni (New) Azerbaijan Party (YAP) believes it is time to
make changes in the composition of the OSCE Minsk Group (MG) that
is mediating a settlement to the Armenia-Azerbaijan conflict over
Upper (Nagorno) Garabagh, its deputy chairman said Tuesday.
Ali Ahmadov told reporters that changes are necessitated by the MG countries’ failure to be resolute in resolving the long-lasting dispute. Moreover, the stance of Azerbaijan, as a country whose territory has been subjected to occupation, is not being defended enough.
"Turkey could be the worthiest and beneficial candidate for perfecting and supplementing this format," Ahmadov said.
The YAP deputy chairman said Turkey is interested in resolving the Garabagh conflict fairly and while reinstating Azerbaijan’s violated rights.
"For this reason we applaud Turkey’s joining the process. The involvement of Turkey, which has great influence in the region, could make a significant contribution to the conflict settlement."
Azerbaijan and Armenia fought a lengthy war that ended with the signing of a cease-fire in 1994, but Armenia continues to occupy Upper Garabagh and seven other Azerbaijani districts in defiance of international law. The mediating Minsk Group is co-chaired by the United States, Russia and France.*
